June 10, 2025 — Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congressman William Timmons has officially written a letter to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Mark T. Uyeda Atkins, requesting the disclosure of internal agency documents regarding its regulatory approach to Ethereum (ETH) under the leadership of Gary Gensler as SEC Chair under the Biden administration.
The demand follows continued controversy over a proposed CLARITY Act, a legislative initiative seeking to create clearer and consistent regulatory frameworks governing the cryptocurrency sector.
In his letter, Timmons expressed confusion over what he called the SECs uneven treatment of Ethereum over the last several years. Both crypto proponents and legislators have complained that the agency has sent conflicting signals about whether ETH is a security, commodity, or something different – with that uncertainty potentially carrying broad ramifications across digital asset markets.
The transparency push by Timmons is an element of a wider bipartisan call in Congress to bring clarity to the crypto industry, which has been expanding rapidly. The letter can also be regarded as the reaction to the growing pressure on the part of the blockchain and investment community, claiming that the lack of consistent leadership among federal regulators stifles innovation and harms investor confidence.
The SEC has not yet responded publicly to the inquiry.
